Goro Falls, 44 m in height and 12 m in width, is one of the numerous waterfalls formed in extensive ignimbrite plateaus around the Aso caldera, central Kyushu. Recession of the waterfall has caused dissection of the welded ignimbrites, forming deep gorges below the waterfall. Spectacular features of joints in the Aso-1 ignimbrite, which is the oldest (ca. 270 ka) among the four major Aso ignimbrites, are clearly seen on the cliffs around the waterfall. The base of the ignimbrite is at 8 m above plunge pool, indicating that fluvial gravel layer beneath the ignimbrite has been eroded together.
阿蘇火山は，世界有数の大規模なカルデラ火山である．カルデラの周囲には大量の火砕流堆積物が広く分布し，その溶結部では滝が多く形成されている．五老ヶ滝は，約27万年前に噴出したAso-1火砕流堆積物にかかり，形成当初の地点から現在の位置まで，峡谷を下流に残しながら後退してきた．高さ約44 m，幅約12 m（実測値）．下流の谷底からは，柱状節理を呈する溶結凝灰岩の断面がよく見える．崖の基部，滝壷の水面から約8 mの高さまではAso-1の基盤をなす礫層であり，滝より下流では，火砕流堆積物の溶結部だけでなく基盤にまで侵食が及んでいることがわかる．
